Very Short Mondays: Bonsai

"Oh I simply adore your hair!"

"I know, it's gorgeous, isn't it?"

"I must have your stylist's number."

"Oh, you must, he's simply a treat!  He calls himself a 'Bonsai Barber'.  It's just so terribly witty."

"Like the tree?  Oh how adorable!"

"He specialises in smaller versions of larger hairstyles."

"Oh yes, I see that now.  How clever!"

"He rubs a sort of gel into your scalp - 'hair food', he calls it - and then carefully 'prunes' your style one hair at a time."

"One hair at a time?  How thorough!"

"Took him six and a half hours to do mine.  Not cheap though."

"Oh dear.  What's the damage?"

"Three thousand an hour."

"Golly.  How adventurous!"

Very Short Mondays: Star Anise

"You should put star anise in all your food.  It's got some chemical or other in it which helps with all that.  It was in the paper the other day.  Did you see it?"

"No," said Jayne.  "Talking of which, I'm pretty tired actually.  I should probably go home.  Maybe I'll try it in my dinner tonight."

She smiled at the man, pleased with the excuse she had given for leaving these dreadful people.

She handed in her resignation later that day.  She could no longer be a part of this.

Very Short Mondays: You Can See It In The Shop Windows

I was taking Dingo out for a walk when it happened.  I don't know what scared me more: the sudden feeling of emptiness and heartbreaking, crippling despair, or the slow but sure changes undergone by Dingo in the weeks that followed.

The singular event, I think, I can put to one side.  But the aftermath...

The aftermath.  Every time I look at the bars on the shop windows, it's a sobering reminder that things will never be quite the same again.
